The Museum of Modern Art is celebrating, as it will be hosting works by Mexican artists for a short season, after almost two decades of not visiting Mexico City. Among them, Diego Rivera’s Vendedora de Alcatraces stands out.
From February 17 to May 17, 68 pieces from the Gelman Santander Collection will be on display. Get ready to see iconic creations by Frida Kahlo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, María Izquierdo, Rufino Tamayo, and, of course, Diego Rivera.
In addition to Diego Rivera’s iconic piece Vendedora de Alcatraces (1943), you can see the paintings: Self-Portrait with Necklace, Self-Portrait with Monkeys, and Diego in My Thoughts by Frida Kahlo, as well as Orozco’s Salón México. It should be noted that 27 of the 68 pieces are declared Artistic Monuments.
You are probably familiar with some of the paintings and photographs on display; however, on this occasion, you will have the opportunity to see the original works in person.
It is important to mention that the Gelman Santander Collection consists of 160 works of 20th-century Mexican art. In addition to the artists mentioned above, the collection includes creations by Francisco Toledo, Gunther Gerzso, Guillermo Kahlo, Gabriel Figueroa, Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, and Graciela Iturbide.
The total number of pieces included in the exhibition Modern Stories: Emblematic Works from the Gelman Santander Collection has not been revealed; however, we can tell you that it will be an exquisite artistic experience.
Remember that the Museum of Modern Art is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. General admission is $95; admission is free for students, teachers, INAPAM members, and people with disabilities. On Sundays, admission is free for everyone.
We recommend visiting as soon as possible, as after May 17, the exhibition will travel to Europe.
