One of the most special spots for plant lovers in Mexico City is undergoing a complete transformation. In case you didn’t know, the Chapultepec Orchid House is set to be renovated, and the project includes everything from new glass panels to the creation of a forest inside—here’s what you need to know!
According to information shared by Chapultepec Forest, the goal is to conserve the species currently inhabiting the grounds and to strengthen its living collection. The goal: for it to become one of the largest and most important collections of Mexican orchids in Latin America displayed in a space of this kind.
This enchanting space, which captivates visitors the moment they step inside, is part of the Botanical Garden and is located in the First Section of Chapultepec Forest.
Smart glass and restored stained-glass windows
What kind of work will be done? One of the first tasks will be restoring the structure that supports the dome. The current glass panels will be replaced with smart glass, designed to help lower the temperature and increase humidity to create suitable conditions for the various ecosystems.
The stained-glass windows will also be restored. The main one uses a technique known as copper foil, while two other vaults feature leaded stained-glass windows.
The project also includes the Orchidarium’s three bodies of water, the restoration of the central fountain, and the renovation of the irrigation system. Additionally, air recirculators and equipment to monitor environmental conditions will be installed.
There will be a forest inside the Orchid House
Another new feature will be the creation of an indoor forest with accompanying flora representative of different floristic zones in Mexico. The intention is for the space to do more than just display orchids; it will also allow visitors to learn about some of the ecosystems where these species thrive.
There will also be new displays for the living collection and areas where you can sit back, take in this incredible space, and relax.
