Do you remember the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics? One of the opening acts featured human figures suspended from long structures that seemed to float above the Pont Neuf. This October, you’ll be able to witness a similar scene, but this time at the UNAM University Cultural Center .
It’s RoZéo, a production by the renowned French company Gratte Ciel, which will come to Mexico City as part of the CulturaUNAM Festival program. The show will have two performances on October 10, at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., on the La Espiga Esplanade at the CCU.
What is RoZéo, and why do its performers float in the air?
In this aerial piece, the performers remain suspended on long, flexible poles that sway in the wind. From above, their bodies sway slowly and blend into the surroundings, creating an image that changes depending on the landscape and the natural conditions of the moment.
Gratte Ciel ’s production explores the relationship between humans and nature. Rather than using the space merely as a stage, RoZéo engages with the landscape: the wind dictates part of the movement and transforms the way the audience views the performers.
The French company has taken this production to various open spaces in major cities, making the suspended figures appear among buildings, plazas, and other urban settings.
Now RoZéo in Mexico City: it will become part of the Ciudad Universitaria landscape
In Mexico City, the show will be staged on the La Espiga Esplanade, inside the University Cultural Center. Thus, the architecture and open spaces of Ciudad Universitaria will be part of the visual experience.
It will be an opportunity to see this aerial art piece up close without leaving the city. The best part? Since it takes place outdoors, each performance is unique, as the show takes on a different rhythm depending on the wind’s movement.
