Are you ready, guys?! The Santa María la Ribera neighborhood never ceases to amaze us with delicious restaurants, and we’re here to recommend a great place to eat in this area: Fondo de Bichini. It’s a seafood restaurant inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants and the show’s iconic characters. You’ll even run into Handsome Squidward himself!
Located at Santa María 104, this seafood restaurant will transport you to the world of Bikini Bottom; you’ll find references not only on the walls and in the decor, but also in the food and drinks.
A Magic Conch Shell suggested we kick off a real feast. It’s a combo of four shots of oysters, black sauces, and Clamato that arrived in the very pineapple where SpongeBob lives.
Among the dishes we liked best were the Coquito Shrimp ($350)—breaded and super crispy—and the pineapple stuffed with shrimp au gratin with Manchego cheese, perfect for snacking ($250).
One of the signature dishes is the Colorburger, which you can order with beef or shrimp. The best part is that you get to choose the color of your dish, which comes with fries for $200.
Cocktails and drinks served in themed glasses
Fondo de Bikini is a family-friendly restaurant that will adapt to whatever mood you’re in. For the little ones, there are Azulitos Kids ($55) or frosted Arizonas ($60); plus, you can ask for them to be served in themed cups for an additional fee. The drinks are frosted and decorated with gummy candies.
For adults who can’t stop breaking their pants, there are both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks—from beers to one-liter mojitos, which come to the table with a 200-milliliter bottle of Bacardi.
The ceviches—the true stars of the deep sea
This restaurant stands out for its ceviches and Northern-style cocktails. Their flavor has a story that goes far beyond the plate itself and culminates precisely in the opening of Fondo de Bikini.
Let’s start by noting that the founders, Carlos and Zaira, are a couple who have always had a passion for ceviche. In fact, on their first date, she made him a green Sinaloa-style ceviche, and the recipe was so delicious that they now have four locations. And yes, this recipe is available on the menu.
As we mentioned, in addition to Santa María la Ribera, there are other locations in the Industrial and Jardín Balbuena neighborhoods, as well as in the Azcapotzalco district.
