Social protests in Mexico City’s Historic Center are already affecting cultural activities in the area. In recent hours, several museums and historic sites have announced temporary closures or changes to their operations due to the protests and gatherings taking place in the heart of the capital.
Among the venues that have suspended activities are the National Art Museum (MUNAL), the Museum of Mexico City, the Iturbide Palace, the Valparaíso Forum, and the Colegio de San Ildefonso—some of the most visited sites by residents and tourists who explore the Historic Center daily.
The announcement that drew the most attention was that of the MUNAL, which reported via its social media accounts that it will remain closed until further notice for reasons beyond the venue’s control. Shortly thereafter, the Museum of Mexico City shared a similar statement, also without specifying a date for resuming activities.
Which museums and sites are closed?
In addition to the MUNAL and the Museum of Mexico City, the Iturbide Palace and the Valparaíso Forum confirmed that they will remain closed due to the social protests taking place in the downtown area of the capital.
For its part, the Colegio de San Ildefonso also announced a temporary closure; however, it was the only venue to provide a tentative reopening date. According to its statement, it will resume activities starting Wednesday, June 3, during its regular hours.
Meanwhile, the Museo del Estanquillo and the Palacio de Minería also announced on social media that they would be temporarily closed.
The closures have taken domestic and foreign visitors by surprise, especially since several of these sites are part of the most popular cultural tours in the Historic Center.
