Do you already know the glass curtain of Bellas Artes? It is a huge piece that adorns the main hall of the precinct. It is composed of about one million pieces of glass and you can visit it on a free tour of the place.
The Palace of Fine Arts not only surprises for its exterior design, but for all the pieces, murals and works inside. Such is the case of this glass curtain, which has a landscape with the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes.
According to the official website of the precinct, this landscape was appreciated from the National Palace in the early twentieth century. In other words, you will not only appreciate a work of art, but you will also get a glimpse of the past of the Valley of Mexico.
This is how you can get to know the glass curtain of the Palace of Fine Arts.
This curtain was built in New York by Tiffany. As explained in a bulletin of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, the piece is more than 12 meters high and 14 meters wide, weighing approximately 22 tons!
It was made with glass and a double metal wall in order to be safe in case of a fire in the place. Its construction was completed in 1911 and brought to Mexico via the ship Monterrey.
A characteristic of this curtain is that it does not roll up when it is lifted, but goes up completely. It is located in the main hall. You can admire this curtain in the shows of the precinct, as well as in the free tours that are made in the place.
Bellas Artes guided tours of the main hall are at 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm from Tuesday to Friday. You must arrive early because you have to register beforehand.
