After the earthquakes of September 19, 1985, 2017 and 2022, the perception has been generated that September is the month with the most earthquakes in Mexico. However, this is not so.
Through a publication in UNAM Global it is detailed that, historically, the month that has registered the most earthquakes is December. Just as you read it! But be careful: this does not mean that there is an earthquake season or that every December there is a lot of tremors.
Every year thousands of earthquakes are registered in Mexico. In 2024 alone, more than 33 thousand were reported, while in 2023 there were 24,117, according to data from the National Seismological Service.
In general, most of the earthquakes that occur in Mexico do not usually have magnitudes greater than 4 degrees, so we hardly feel them.
The month with more earthquakes in Mexico is different every year
Statistically, December is the month that has registered the most earthquakes according to historical figures. However, the months with the most earthquakes each year tend to vary.
In 2024 September and October were the months that registered the most earthquakes in Mexico; while in 2023 it was December and January. Regarding 2022, the months with more earthquakes were November and October; while in 2021 there were more earthquakes in September and December, according to data from the National Seismological Service.
In a press release, Raúl Valenzuela Wong, researcher of the Seismology Department of the Geophysics Institute of the UNAM, detailed that both CDMX and the rest of the country are seismically active zones. “The possibility of a major earthquake is present at any time, and is not limited to a certain month,” the publication explains. That is why it is always necessary to be prepared.
