This area of Mexico City is more than ready to celebrate the Day of the Dead; in fact, it will host several activities as part of a festival. Check out how to get to Mixquic by public transportation and everything that’s in store.
Mixquic is one of the most talked-about destinations when it comes to the Day of the Dead. In addition to its traditional lantern procession, this year there will be several activities as part of the International Day of the Dead Festival in Tláhuac.
In Plaza Juárez in San Andrés Mixquic, there will be dancing, music, and more on October 31, as well as on November 1 and 2. For example, on Sunday, November 1, the Banda Típica de la Ciudad de México will perform at 1:00 p.m. sharp, while Mariachi 2000 will take the stage at 8:00 p.m.
On Monday, November 2, Alejandro Filio will perform at 8:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Ensamble de Dos Almas Rancheras will close out the festival’s activities in Mixquic.
One of Mixquic’s most traditional activities is La Alumbrada. This is a moment when all the surrounding lights are turned off and visitors to the cemetery light hundreds of candles to bid farewell to their loved ones as the Day of the Dead comes to a close. It usually takes place around 7:00 p.m. on November 2.
But be aware: this is a tradition in which people remember their loved ones, so if you go, it’s important to remain respectful at all times and keep in mind that La Alumbrada is neither a show nor a tourist attraction.
