The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) announced which banknotes will no longer circulate by the end of 2024.
In case you didn’t know, the tickets that we use daily are classified into families, depending on when they were launched or their common characteristics.
On this occasion, the D family banknotes, which went into circulation almost 30 years ago (in 1996), and other commemorative banknotes, used since 2000, have already begun their withdrawal process.
When they go out of circulation, they will no longer be printed and disappear.
According to Banxico, these are the 6 bills that have already begun their withdrawal process:
- $10, with Emiliano Zapata’s face. Do you still have any?
- The $20 ones dedicated to Benito Juárez that are still around.
- Of $50 and with the face of José María Morelos y Pavón.
- $100 bills with the effigy of Nezahualcoyotl and a vignette of a Tlatoani on the obverse.
- Farewell to the $200 dedicated to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
- $500 and with Ignacio Zaragoza on the front.
Each of these six banknotes also has another version, not belonging to the D family, which were released in 2000.
The only difference between them and the ones that appeared in 1996 is the legend “75th Anniversary 1925-2000” in the upper left corner. You can find it below the text “Banco de México,” which is in capital letters.
Banxico launched the latter on August 25, 2000, to commemorate its anniversary.
So what if, in 2025, you still have banknotes that will cease to circulate in 2024?
don’t panic! You don’t have to spend them all, and you won’t stop receiving them when you make your purchases; you can also continue to use them in your loans to your friends and receive them with confidence.
All will still retain their value or “releasing power”, which is the technical term.
Once they reach the banks, they will be stored separately and sent to Banxico, so they will no longer be delivered to the public.
You can also go to your preferred bank branch or the nearest one and ask them to exchange them for new ones of the same denomination.
We do not recommend keeping them under the mattress and forgetting about them. Banxico always officially announces when they will lose their value.
