For several years there has been an initiative in Ciudad Universitaria in which they collect laptops that people no longer use in order to repair and update them so that they can be donated to students who need them. Meet the UNAM’s Science Recyclatron.
This initiative arose during the pandemic, when Professor Jaime Vázquez Alamilla was looking for alternatives so that students could take their classes online. This is how he came up with the idea of collecting used computers.
As detailed on the UNAM’s Science Faculty website, the computers that are donated receive maintenance and upgrades so that they work in the best possible way. Once they are ready, they are given to students of the faculty who need them.
Science Recyclatron: How can I donate a computer?
The first thing you need to know is that we will mainly receive laptops that are no more than 10 years old and that are working. You can also bring desktop computers, but in general the program focuses on laptops.
You can bring the equipment to the Tlahuizcalpan building, in the General Computing Workshop from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. They only receive them from Monday to Friday.
If you are a student, you can request the computer at the General Computing Workshop. It is important that you bring your proof of enrollment or student ID; remember that this program is for students of the faculty.
