The National Museum of Art (Munal) has a premiere! Fly away to see the new exhibition “Angels. The heavenly hosts on Earth”. The exhibition is composed of more than 200 pieces, including the original head of the Angel of Independence.
The pieces come from the Munal, as well as from public and private collections. This exhibition explores angelic iconography, as well as its wide-ranging meanings, according to a press release.
what will I see at the Angels exhibition. The heavenly hosts on Earth?
The exhibition is divided into four nuclei:
- Marian angels
- Saints and Angels
- The chief of the heavenly armies
- Allegorical angels
You will mainly find images and paintings by different artists, such as Miguel Cabrera, Manuel Ocaranza, Félix Parra and many more.
You will also find sculptures and a huge mural called “Entre ángeles te veas” by Humberto Morales. In front of this work there are mirrors so you can see how you look with the wings of an angel. You can take amazing pictures.
Towards the end of the tour you will see the original head of the Angel of Independence. That’s right! The piece that we currently see on Paseo de la Reforma is not the one that was put in place from the beginning.
The Angel of Independence fell during the 1957 earthquake and had to be restored. The original head has been kept since then in the Historical Archive of Mexico City, and in this exhibition you will be able to see it in person!
The exhibition will be on view at the Munal (Tacuba 8, Centro Histórico) from May 16 to September 8, 2024. You can visit from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The cost of the ticket is $90.
