If you want to obtain a permanent driver’s license in Mexico City, the window to apply is closing. The program will remain in effect for the remainder of 2026, but it has already been announced that it will no longer be available in 2027.
The process began in 2025 as a program that was to be available for a limited time. Subsequently, its validity was extended through 2026, giving those seeking to obtain this document another chance.
Juan Pablo de Botton, Mexico City’s Secretary of Administration and Finance, explained that the program will remain active throughout 2026 and encouraged residents to take advantage of the remaining months. He also reported that more than two million permanent driver’s licenses have already been issued in the capital.
Until when can you apply for a permanent driver’s license in Mexico City?
The deadline is December 31, 2026. This means that, according to the announcement by the capital’s authorities, the program will no longer be available starting in 2027.
The cost of the process is 1,500 pesos, payable in a single installment. If you already have a Type A driver’s license, you’ll need to enter your license number and provide the payment reference number.
Those applying for a license for the first time must follow the procedure corresponding to their situation when scheduling an appointment.
How do I schedule an appointment for a permanent driver’s license?
The process begins through the Online Appointment System of the Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi). To log in, you’ll need your Llave CDMX account.
If you don’t have one yet, you’ll need to create one by providing your CURP, ZIP code, email address, and cell phone number.
Once you’re in the system, select “Schedule an Appointment” and choose the appropriate option: people who already have a Type A driver’s license, those who have never applied for one, or those who already have a paid reference number.
