Starting this weekend you will be able to see monumental skulls in Tláhuac. The theme of this 2024 will be about Tláloc. Are you going to go and see them? Take note of all the details, because the event will last only one week.
For several years the Jaen Cartonería collective has been in charge of making giant skulls for the Day of the Dead. The project that began with small pieces outside a home, has become over time a huge exhibition (and a tradition in this part of Mexico City).
The goal of this exhibition is to turn the galle into a gallery and to promote the traditions of the Day of the Dead. The work for this installation begins in January of each year and represents an enormous task.
This is what the monumental skulls of Tláhuac 2024 will look like.
The theme changes every year. This year 2024 the exhibition will be dedicated to Tláloc; in addition, there will be a tribute to those who died due to hurricanes Otis and John.
The exhibition will start this Saturday, October 26 and will end next Sunday, November 3.
As in previous years, the monumental skulls will be installed in Francisco Santiago Borraz, Santa Cecilia, Tláhuac. Each one of the pieces is made of cardboard. They are the main attraction of the event; however, every year other activities and surprises are organized. Access is free of charge.
If you are going to take the plunge you should know that the street where the skulls are placed is a few minutes away from Metro Tláhuac, on Metro Line 12.
Jaen Cartonería is a collective born in 2011. In addition to these skulls, they usually make other pieces of cardboard for events such as floats and patron saint festivals.
