Good news for the end of 2024! Well, during the last few months the number of visits to museums across the country has increased, but can you guess which was the most visited museum in Mexico City in 2024?
According to a report by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) it was revealed that museums across the country had an increase in visitors of 48.4 million people – 10.8 million more than in 2022!
The study only took into account 1193 museums out of the 50,270 museums in Mexico, since many of them are being remodeled, closed for maintenance and other reasons.
The cities with the highest number of visitors to their museums are Mexico City, Nuevo Leon and the State of Mexico. It should be noted that the visits are of national and international tourists.
It is also important to know that more than half of the total number of cultural venues have free admission, while 22% charge a fee and others have a couple of days a week of free admission.
The most visited museum in the CDMX
According to a Statista study it was revealed that four of the 5 most visited museums in Mexico during 2024 are located in the CDMX.
And the most visited museum in the CDMX during 2024 is the National Museum of Anthropology of the CDMX with 1,156,426 visits.
This museum continues to be a favorite for national tourists, and a must-see for international tourists. Here you will find an impressive collection of pieces from different indigenous cultures and the iconic Aztec Calendar.
The second most visited museum in Mexico City is the National Museum of History at Chapultepec Castle with 652,864 visits. Here you can enjoy an impressive view of the Chapultepec Forest and part of the western zone of the CDMX, as well as a collection of pieces from the colonial era, the Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution.
The Museo del Templo Mayor of the CDMX is in third place with 147,583 visits, and is a must for any lover of pre-Hispanic history, as here you can see the remains of the ancient temple of Tenochtitlán.
