Haute cuisine in Mexico is not exactly cheap; fine dining involves sophisticated processes, super-careful ingredients and a lot of experience behind each preparation. Fancy dining rooms are not usually within reach and not to the liking of many diners. However, we visited a restaurant where you can try a three-course menu for $650.
What does it include? A starter and a pasta of your choice, plus dessert. Our recommendation: a thousand sweet potato leaves with pecorino as a starter, and for pasta, garganelli with mushroom ragout, cashew nuts and ricotta cheese. As for dessert, the gelato with olive oil and salt is not to be missed.
It is worth trying the four-course menu for $950, which adds a main course to the menu. Add two glasses of wine for $350 more.
The fixed-price menu is only available Tuesday through Friday, 2:00 to 5:30 pm. Please note that the cost of each dish (after hours) ranges from $180 to $900. On Tuesdays, bottles of wine are 50% off. You can see the full menu here.
Reasons to eat at Galea
In a reality where internet videos advertise places to eat, claiming to be the “best”, it is very difficult to find truly delicious restaurants. We know: but at Galea restaurant the food is special.
Starting with the fact that its chef, Rafael Zaga, is in the kitchen, a practice that the city’s restaurants have lost. Why is this important? The chef has trained his expertise in top-notch kitchens: Marea in New York is one of the many restaurants where he worked.
So the Galea team knows what they are doing. Here you will find Mediterranean food: pastas, cuts of meat and catch of the day, among other delicacies. Each process takes time and it shows (and tastes); it will always be a pleasure to taste well-made food.
Pasta and seafood are the chef’s forte; he confesses it and we confirm it. We tried the catch of the day: a perfectly cooked totoaba accompanied by mint and pistachio.
Galea, one of the great successes of Michelin Mexico.
The arrival of the Michelin Guide to Mexico has caused all kinds of comments. There are diners who think that the prestigious list has lost its charm and purpose. On the other hand, there are those who are faithful to its recommendations.
Like any new project, the Guide continues to explore and define its identity in Mexico. One of its great successes was to recognize Galea with a Bib Gourmand distinction, which applauds the relationship between quality and price.
Beyond its $650 menu, this is a restaurant that has moderate prices with an average check of $1,000. You decide if this rate is affordable or not. However, we can tell you that you will get your money’s worth in a delicious experience.
Let’s not leave aside the space: small and without presumptuous airs, but with a nice atmosphere that tends to intimacy. Attention to detail: careful lighting, elegant glassware and tableware and impeccable service.
If you are already convinced that this place will be your next stop, visit Galea at Sinaloa 67, Roma Norte. Open Monday to Saturday from 2:00 pm to 11:00 pm, and Sunday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
