Did the Angel of Independence fall down? Did any of the sculptures around it collapse? Don’t panic! Everything has an explanation. This emblematic monument of Mexico City is in perfect condition.
This Tuesday morning , October 22nd, some images began to circulate on the Internet showing a sculpture of the Angel of Independence column on the ground. We tell you what happened.
Did the Angel of Independence fall down?
No. The Angel and the entire monument are in good condition and without any damage. Through a press release, Mexico City’s Ministry of Culture said that everything that was seen in the video is part of the shooting of a movie.
Meanwhile the director José Manuel Cravioto detailed that the figure seen on the ground is a replica. “The Angel did not fall, it looks like it fell but it is a replica of rubber scenery. We are shooting a movie, the Angel is fine, we are recreating a sequence from 1957, when the Angel fell”, he detailed.
In this exhibition you can see the original face of the Angel.
This monument is in perfect condition; however, it did fall many years ago due to the 1957 earthquake. In fact, the figure we currently see on Paseo de la Reforma is not the original.
After that earthquake the monument was restored and reinforced. The original head is currently on display at the Museo Nacional de Arte ( Tacuba 8, Centro Histórico), as part of the exhibition Ángeles. The Heavenly Hosts on Earth.
This exhibition will be on display until November 10, so you still have a chance to see it. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. General admission is $90.
