Every summer, the forests of the Sierra Norte de Puebla become the setting for one of Mexico’s most impressive natural phenomena. On July 17,2026, you’ll be able to experience it up close thanks to a firefly tour in Puebla organized by Paseos Culturales INAH, which will depart from Mexico City and travel to Tlatlauquitepec, one of the state’s most enchanting “Pueblos Mágicos” (Magical Towns ).
The experience combines nature, history, and spectacular scenery. In addition to watching the glow of thousands of fireflies at night, participants will tour some of the region’s most iconic sites before heading to the Presa de la Soledad, where the firefly viewing will take place.
Here’s what the firefly tour in Puebla will be like
The adventure will begin with a departure from Parque Hundido in Mexico City. After the trip to Tlatlauquitepec, the group will visit the former convent of Santa María de la Asunción, one of the most important historic sites in Puebla’s Sierra Norte.
Afterward, there will be free time to rest and eat before continuing on to the Presa de la Soledad. At the dock, visitors will receive instructions on how to participate in the activity responsibly and respectfully toward the natural environment.
The most anticipated moment will come at nightfall, when a boat tour lasting approximately an hour and a half takes place. During the trip, you’ll be able to witness the fireflies’ luminous spectacle—a phenomenon associated with their mating rituals that transforms the landscape into an almost magical scene.
