The 2024 heat season has been quite intense. Although the rainy season is just around the corner, there are still a few days left with high temperatures in Mexico City. So today we are going to talk about heat stroke.
According to the UNAM School of Medicine, heat stroke is a medical condition that occurs when the body temperature rises to 41 degrees Celsius. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to this condition.
Although it may not seem like it, these heat strokes can cause significant damage, so it is important to know how to act when faced with one.
what are the symptoms of heat stroke?
According to the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the person may present the following symptoms:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Rapid pulse
- Excessive sweating
- Headache
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
- Hot skin
- Dehydration
- Ringing in the ears
- Tachycardia
As we mentioned above, children and older adults are the most vulnerable to heat stroke. As explained by the Secretary of Health of the CDMX children may present symptoms such as:
- Dry mouth
- Irritability
- Thick saliva
- Crying without tears
- Sinking in the eyes
Now, what happens with the pets? The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of the UNAM explains that animals with heat stroke present symptoms such as:
- Seizures
- Diarrhea
- Red gums
- Low energy
- Fast and loud panting
- Salivation is usually excessive
- Fast breathing
In case you detect any of these symptoms it is of utmost importance to seek medical attention. The Ministry of Health recommends going to the nearest health center.

how to avoid heat stroke?
To avoid heat stroke, authorities recommend adequate hydration throughout the day. In the case of children and older adults, it is recommended that they do not expose themselves to the sun between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
If you must go outdoors, don’t forget to wear light-colored, lightweight clothing, sunscreen and a hat or cap.
