Mexico City and, above all, its Historic Center boast many architectural gems. One of our favorites is Casa Abierta Monte and we are going to tell you why.
If you have walked in front of its façade, located on one of the sides of Plaza de la Constitución (next to the Cathedral), you will already know that it is beautiful.
Perhaps you know it better as the headquarters of Nacional Monte de Piedad. Because since 2021 its halls, corridors, terraces and patios are available for different uses, its new official name is precisely Casa Abierta Monte.
Facts you might not know about Casa Abierta Monte
- Its history dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when it was the palace of Axayácatl.
- With the arrival of Hernán Cortés, it became his official residence and a fundamental piece of the Mexican economy.
- Unesco named it a World Heritage Site, due to its artistic and historical importance.
- Since 2013, thanks to the remodeling works to have a more environmentally friendly building, it obtained the Leed Gold Level certification.
- One of the most important artistic works it houses is the stained glass window “Celestial Version” by Vicente Rojo.
In a new stage of innovation
As we told you at the beginning, Casa Abierta Monte not only continues to offer strategic financing through pawning to thousands of Mexican families, but also seeks to reinvent itself.
Its interior spaces are designed for artistic experiences, such as concerts, exhibitions or recitals. There are also huge rooms for workshops, meetings, work presentations or social gatherings.
It also has an auditorium and a library, and will soon be able to host gastronomic experiences.
This is just the beginning of an exciting stage for one of the most beautiful buildings in our city, which achieves an interesting mix between our pre-Hispanic roots, colonial architecture and the capacity to host innovative events.
