9. Palace of Fine Arts

There is no doubt that the Palace of Fine Arts is one of the must-see sites for any tourist and an icon for any Mexican. This cultural precinct of art deco design enchants everyone who strolls through the Historic Center of Mexico City.
Now pay close attention, we’ll tell you a secret that almost nobody knows! Bellas Artes has free entrance guided tours.
It lasts about 90 minutes and you can visit the main auditorium, the glass curtain with the image of the volcanoes, the stage, the dressing rooms, the make-up and costume area, the Apollo stained glass window with the Muses of the arts, the official boxes and the terraces of the Palace of Fine Arts.

19. Temple of Ehecatl

The subway temple dating from the early 14th century, dedicated to the Mexica god of the wind, is located under a shopping center and next to a housing unit. It was discovered in 2014 after the demolition of a supermarket that was located in the iconic Tlatelolco, neighboring city of Tenochtitlan.
All this is part of the new museum space linked to the Templo Mayor and already opened its doors to the public so it can be visited. To enter it will be necessary for visitors to pay the entrance ticket to the Templo Mayor Museum.
The space has been conditioned, although it is not yet completely finished and work is still being done on it during the week, so the Temple of Ehecatl can only be visited by appointment.

31. La Villa Wax Museum

A few steps away from the Basilica of Guadalupe is this peculiar museum founded in 1949. It is one of the oldest museums in Mexico City; in it you will find 20 wax figures representing characters such as Cantinflas, El Chavo del 8 and the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
All the pieces were handmade using materials such as fiberglass, wax, ocular prosthesis and even natural hair. It was founded by Dilea Castillo Garcia and her husband Jose Neira and to this day it is still going strong thanks to their great-grandson. It’s quite the family tradition!

34. Hot springs in Peñón de los Baños

In Mexico City you will find places full of history, for example these ancient hot springs. They are located in Peñón de los Baños and have been in existence for so many years that they were visited by characters such as Moctezuma, Porfirio Díaz and Carlota.

35. Museo de la Calaverita

This museum is unique in that it is only open during the Day of the Dead. But don’t be scared, it doesn’t come from the underworld, but it is a temporary activity to celebrate this season. It is installed in a house located a few steps from the Mixquic Pantheon.
The people in charge of bringing this place to life are Marco Antonio Galicia and his son, who every year offer a unique show full of music. They characterize 30 reed skulls as some character that has been relevant during the year and make them dance with threads.

36. Tezozómoc Park

This park has a very peculiar artificial lake, as it is a replica of Lake Texcoco. Just as you read it! The idea is to make reference to what the Valley of Mexico was like a long time ago. Besides seeing this body of water you can visit the butterfly garden, skate and enjoy outdoor activities.

37. Cerro de la Estrella

38. Memorabilia Café

39. Axolotitlán

Don’t deny it: we are all fans of the “Ajolopesos”. The most recent image of the $50 bill caused a furor and many people have decided to keep them because of the ajolote image in front of it.
The best part is that the ajolote that posed for the bill lives in CDMX and you can visit her. Her name is Gorda and she lives in Axolotitlán, a museum dedicated to salamanders. In addition to meeting her, you will discover the care of these little animals and the ecosystem in which they live.
