This is one of the best times of the year to take pictures in CDMX: everything is decorated with papel picado, there are cempasúchil flowers and many colorful activities. In these places to take Day of the Dead pictures you will find the perfect shot.
1. Paseo de la Reforma
A must-see when it comes to Day of the Dead! The boulevard is full of cempasúchil flowers and you can get a good shot from different points, either with the Angel of Independence, the Diana Cazadora or Chapultepec Castle in the background, for example.
Also in this street you can see a free exhibition of monumental alebrijes ( until November 5) and Mexicráneos ( until November 14).
2. Zócalo
One of the best places to take Day of the Dead photos in CDMX. Every year a monumental ofrenda with a different theme is installed. On this occasion we will see a huge cartonería figure measuring 17 meters, as well as traditional Mexican ofrendas and a tribute to Pancho Villa.
Everything will be accompanied by decorative lighting in honor of José Guadalupe Posada.
3. Historic Downtown
Mexico City’s Historic Downtown will be filled with altars as part of the Festival de Ofrendas y Arreglos Florales 2023. You will be able to visit them from October 27 to November 4 in establishments in perimeter A and B of this area of the CDMX. There will be plenty to see!
4. Xochimilco
If there is an area that fills with orange color, it is this Mexico City municipality. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit its traditional flower markets such as Madreselva, Palacio de la Flor and Cuemanco, to name a few. Also don’t forget to travel to Cuemanco to see the spectacle of the Llorona.
5. Tláhuac
On the street of Francisco Santiago Borraz monumental catrinas are installed every year, which you can take pictures of. There are even various activities related to the Day of the Dead. You can visit it from October 28.
6. UNAM’s Ofrenda
This is definitely one of the ofrendas you can’t miss. This time it will last two days (November 1 and 2) and its theme will be “Women in the sciences, humanities and arts”. You will be able to visit it in the red court of the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
7. Coyoacán
This municipality goes all out when it comes to Day of the Dead. One of the must-see places is its monumental ofrenda, which this year will be dedicated to soccer players who have passed away. You can visit it at the Palacio de Cortés until November 10.
